CALL FOR PARTICIPATION (updated)

The 2015 Joint Regional Conference of the Ugnayang Pang-AghamTao, Inc. (Anthropological Association of the Philippines) and of the Philippine Geographical Society on the theme “Dagat ug Kinabuhi/Maritime Cultures, Spaces and Networks” will take place on October 22-24, 2015 in Silliman University, Dumaguete City.

The conference hopes to create an interdisciplinary regional forum (encompassing the area between the Indian and the Pacific Oceans) to discuss issues and debates revolving around maritime contexts as (structured and structuring) fluid zones of spatial connection and separation, and within which contemporary insecurities and vulnerabilities communities must find ways to keep afloat (Dagat ug Kinabuhi means ‘the sea and life [lifeways/strategies]’ in the Visayan languages.) Paper presentations, posters, film showings, exhibits, as well as a GIS workshop are planned.

The conference is convened by Dr. Cynthia Neri Zayas (University of the Philippines-Diliman Center for International Studies). Plenary speakers include Dr. Rila Mukherjee (University of Hyderabad) on “Islands of the Indian Ocean World”, Dr. Paul D’Arcy (The Australian National University) on “Marine Protected Areas and Native Entitlements in the Coral Triangle”, and Dr Aurora Roxas-Lim (ret. faculty of the University of the Philippines) on “The History of Philippine Seamanship”.

Added highlights of the conference also include film showings, a GIS workshop, and two exhibits:

(1) “Human seascape”- Photographs, diaries and video of divers lives from Japan: Kanezaki (Fukuoka), Tsushima, OkinoshimaIsland; Korea: Busan and Jeju; Philippines: Ayoke Island (Surigao), and Davao, by Yamauchi Terue.

(2) “Scarborough Shoal in Ancient Maps” (A Cartographic Exhibit)
